Sales Morale

The morale of the employees in an organization can make significant differences in customer satisfaction, productivity and employee retention.  Each year, private, public and governmental organizations spend millions of hard-earned revenue attempting to raise morale for the sake of harmony, retention and productivity.

The treatment of the people in your organization is a key factor in their overall morale. The concepts of Galatians 5: 22-23 can easily be applied as a template for any individual or company to insure continuous and long-term high morale levels.

The Galatians concepts are listed below with a brief description.

1.     Love:  To practice a deep care and concern for others that says I place your welfare above mine.  From a gender perspective, men want respect and women prefer a deep care and concern about their welfare.  Practice these perspectives and people will go to war for you.

2.     Joy:  Not temporary happiness brought on by pleasant circumstances, but a profound, ever present joy, that says I am at peace.  It is non-judgmental and contagious by its very manner.  Exhibit joy as a leader and watch people wonder what you have and want some of it.

3.     Peace:  An aspect of joy that states the individual is calm and objective in all circumstances.  Panic and shortsightedness are not practiced, nor are they acceptable. Peace promotes approachability.

4.     Patience:  Allowing an issue or person to mature with evenhandedness.  Practicing patience does not mean tolerating slothfulness or being sloppy.  But, it does require insight and wisdom concerning what is reasonable and acceptable.

5.     Kindness:  The outer representation of the inner qualities of love, joy, peace and patience.  To treat others with respect and courtesy.   Common courtesy goes a long way towards maintaining smooth working relationships, even if it is time to reprimand or correct an individual.

6.     Goodness:  The outward manifestation of a set of high personal principles.  To be trustworthy, conscientious and consistent. Goodness promotes a trust in the leader that contributes to high morale.

7.     Gentleness: Treating others with a level of understanding that matches their current understanding of the rules, guidelines and principles at operation in the company and its industry.  And even beyond that, practicing forgiveness.

8.     Faithfulness:  To adhere to Godly principles and the principles of operation in your organization without prompting or threat of penalty.  Trusting in those principles.  Your faithfulness should result in consistent treatment of all stakeholders in the organization.

9.     Self-Control:  An aspect of individual and organizational control that maintains integrity and realizes individual and corporate responsibility.  Adhering to a self-imposed set of standards consistent with treating others as you would wish to be treated.

Not only is morale a critical issue in your organization, but it is also the management’s responsibility.  If the nine steps listed above are being practiced, then several additional steps are very conducive to morale enhancement.  The level of job empowerment, personal participation and respect that clearly communicates to the employee that they are vital to the well-being of the organization are key issues to the employee.

A significant level of personal motivation can be derived from having strong leaders in the organization. A condensed list of these leadership practices are included here.

•        Promotes participative decision making

•        Listens well

•        Develops and sticks to core values

•        Excellent communicator

•        Has empathy

•        Faces reality well

•        Has a vision for the future

Those employees who have reasonable incomes and viable benefit packages will be motivated by having a substantial say in their job functions; and will have a hope for the future by this empowerment.  If your associates lose hope for their future inside your organization, then look for low productivity, burn out symptoms and eventually their separation from the company.  Leadership also includes a close mentoring relationship with your associates that allow the leader to give regular thanks for the associates job efforts and results.

One important qualifier is the proper selection of people to match the job criteria.  Attempting to place an untrained person with a mismatched personality style for a specific job responsibility is a formula for low morale.  For example, asking a trained accountant with an introverted perspective to take on an outside sales responsibility is a poor choice.  Proper selection, mentoring and training are important aspects of the company’s responsibility to promote high morale.

This management responsibility does not include attempting psychological care for dysfunctional people by the immediate manager.  But it will certainly include sufficient concern to refer these employees to professional caregivers.

During some previous research, I uncovered an excellent book on morale issues, which has a morale test for your group included.  The book is titled “Motivating and Rewarding Employees.”  New and Better Ways to Inspire Your People” by Alexander Hiam.

Published by Adams Media Corp., 1999.   Hiam gives blanket permission to use his test provided on pages 43 to 46.

You may have noticed that this information does not recommend a tangible rewards program or continuous competition to keep morale at a high level.  Even money has proven to be a short-term motivator.  People truly do want to contribute and have control of their job functions.  Care, concern and empowerment.  Try these three key aspects of morale enhancement and watch your associates’ productivity rise!

Application:

Is there an area of this list that you find personally or organizationally deficient?  Pick them out and systematically work to improve on these concerns.  Remember that radical change rarely happens quickly.

Ten Engaging Questions for Your Sales Team

One of the best things any salesperson can do is develop a list of 10

questions you feel comfortable asking.

The questions have to fit your personality, your market and allow you to move

the process forward.

Here are ten of the best sales questions you can use. The questions are

not direct closing questions, but rather questions that will get the customer to

share more information to help you focus on the solution the customer desires.

The goal is to get the customer to relax and open up to you about the real

issues in their business. Don’t be surprised to hear some personal concerns as

well.

Not each question will be appropriate for every occasion. The critical issue

is to be comfortable asking them so when the situation is right, you’re also

ready to listen and respond with another question.

1. What’s motivating your decision ?

2. Can you tell me more?

3. How have you made decisions like this in the past?

4. What is the outcome you’re looking for?

5. What is the size of the risk if you don’t make a decision?

6. What are the issues you’re facing today?

7. What happens if you don’t make a decision to move forward?

8. Who else is involved in the decision making process?

9. What are the processes used in your company to make a purchase?

10. What are the issues stopping you from making a decision?

Each of the questions is designed to get the customer to share more and allow

you to ask a deeper probing question. Your goal as a solutions provider is to be

prepared with the best product possible to solve their concerns and earn the

business.

PS: Remember, the prospect may just be a prospect and have a

legitimate reason not to purchase now. Don’t take it personally.

Ten Steps in a Cold Calling Program

 Austin, TX 78729   512-219-6677

 Trucon@sbcglobal.net  www.truconbd.com

10 Steps in a Product Sales Cold Calling Perspective

1. Have the right attitude

As the saying goes, 90 percent of everything in life is attitude.

The same goes for sales.

Before you ever pick up the phone, you need to have the right attitude.

Before you make a call or sit down to type an email, the first thing you should do is get your head wrapped around the concept.

You have the skills to sell in any situation. It doesn’t matter if it’s 58 cents or $58 million.

Give yourself a little pep talk each time and remind yourself: “Hey, I can sell this person.”

2. Believe in your product

You’ve got to believe in what you’re selling.

You’ve got to believe your product is worth at least 10 times the money and the time your prospect will invest in it.

If you don’t believe in the product you’re selling, each time you pick up the phone, you’ll become increasingly unconvincing and robotic.

Sell yourself before trying to sell anyone else.

3. Be persistent

You’ve got to be willing to keep calling people back again and again until you reach them, and they are willing to speak with you.

InsideSales.com research has shown that on average, reps give up after only 1.3 contact attempts. That’s not enough. Stats reveal contact attempts of 8-12 times may be necessary.  You have to adopt a mentality that you won’t quit and bring that into every sales call you make. When a prospect sees your commitment and dedication, they’ll become much more receptive to your message.

 4. Master the pitch

You’ve got to have your pitch down. That’s why scripts are valuable and important.

Whenever you’re making a sales call, whether it’s two minutes or 14 minutes, you need to know your goal.

The best cold calls are 30-45 seconds long

What are you hoping to get out of that call? Is it to close a deal? Is it to find out who the decision makers are? Is it to get an appointment?

Know your goal and tailor your pitch accordingly, because each of these calls will require a slightly different approach.

My cold call format:

Ø  Ask for the decision maker by name

Ø  When and if connected: State your name and company name clearly. Ask…Do you have a moment, or have I caught you at a bad time?

Ø  When and if you get an OK to proceed. Tell them your benefits first. A maximum of three. Not your history, referral list, or your qualifications.

Ø  Next step my be an e-mail, an additional conversation, or an internal referral. Schedule it if at all possible.

5. The significant differentiating claim

We do our best to provide call scripts with a strong differentiating message.  If they don’t please let Gary Seale know as soon as possible.

Your claim has to be something a prospect cannot regurgitate and a competitor cannot imitate.

In other words, your prospect can’t ignore your claim and your competitors can’t match its value.

Your claim must become a hook that sinks so deep in the client that it literally creates a picture they can’t erase.

Nobody buys anything except for one reason, to solve a problem. With your big claim, make sure to clearly express how you will solve your prospect’s problem.

Remember, sometimes people won’t recognize they have a problem until you point it out. Wow them with what you know and what you can deliver.

6. Gains and losses

Before making a cold call, many people complain of nervous jitters.

No one likes rejection, but that’s part of the sales process.

Every sales professional should remember that with each call, they have everything to gain and nothing to lose.

Great salespeople know this and it serves as a powerful confidence booster and motivator.

7. The best value

Every salesperson must believe they have the best value, regardless of price.

What that means is you have to convince yourself that even if you’re four times the price tag, you’re still the best value.

Understand what makes you better. Why should someone buy your product or service over anyone else’s, even when it’s pricier?

Make sure to convince yourself of this value as well as your prospect.

 8.  Respect your prospects

Treat everyone with respect.

Sales reps who are calling people all day can start treating new prospects like the last eight people they failed to sell. This is a big problem with cold calls.

You need to start fresh with every call and treat each new prospect with respect.

9.  The Database – Target Market

Trucon works diligently to provide a database that is composed of prospects that

meet the target demographic for each customer. No database is perfect and there will be employees who have left the company, bad numbers or companies that have gone out of business. Please note that in your call log so those numbers are not redialed.   It may be necessary to adjust the database if it is discovered that the database is not directed at a viable group of prospects. Please keep Gary Seale appraised of your experience with the database.

10. Have the Right tools

Viable CRM, Computer and screen

Strong Wifi or line connection

Keyboard skills or yellow pad

Give yourself a physical/mental breaks – Practice good personal ergonomics

Reminder Scrip in front of you

Scrip available for copy paste and resending w/Graphics

7 Essential Stages of a Total Online Presence

Content Platform

So much of what happens online revolves around

content. It’s how you get found, why people pay

attention and how you start to exchange value. Without

a content platform to build from a great deal of effort in

other stages will be wasted.

To me, the content platform starts with building

a listening station with tools like Google Alerts,

TweetDeck, Trackur, Social Mention, Sprout Social

or Radian6. From this point you can gain insight into

your market, your competitors and important groups,

such as key journalists, while starting the work of better

understanding your most important keyword phrases.

Keywords are like chapters

in your total body of

content plan. Doing

research, using tools such

as Google Keyword Tool or

Wordtracker, are the most

important ways to show up when people search for a

business like yours, and creating blog posts around these

chapters, using an editorial calendar approach, is how

you fortify your content platform.

Once you start consistently creating content, you can

produce valuable eBooks that will be the pivotal element

of your email lead capture stage.

There’s really very little reason to play this game if you

don’t put the effort in at this stage.

2 Organic SEO

Having someone type a search phrase that is key to your

business and finding a blog post or page from your site

on page one of the results is the ultimate payoff and,

long-term, may be the difference between success

and failure.

Search Engine Optimization can be complex and time

consuming, but most businesses can generate significant

results without making it so, if you simply focus on the

following three elements.

Produce keyword rich, educational content – we covered

this above, but search engines live on blog posts and

other educational content. Use a tool like Scribe from

Copyblogger to help you write more search engine

friendly content.

Make it easy on the search engines – Make the

on-page elements, such as your blog titles, URLs, image attributes, subtitles and internal

links, work for you. Use XML sitemaps

that make it easy for search engines to

grab your latest. Check out Search

Engine News for a great primer.

Draw lots of links

naturally from other

sites – Simply writing great

content will start this process, but so will writing guest

posts, uploading content to places like YouTube and

Slideshare, making thoughtful comments on other blogs,

submitting online press releases and amplifying your

content in social networks.

(Covered below)

ges of a

Total Online Presence

3 Email Marketing

An engaged email list, eager to hear from you, is the

most valuable asset you can build. 1000 responsive email

followers trumps 25,000 Twitter followers every day

when it comes to actually promoting the things that

make you money.

Focus on building a list of email subscribers that want to

hear from you and social media will become a tool set to

help you do more of that.

Choose an email service

provider (ESP), such

as Constant Contact,

GetResponse, AWeber,

MailChimp or Infusionsoft,

and go to work on building

email capture forms with the

offer of your free eBook or weekly newsletter before you

move on to social media.

4 Social Media Marketing

This is certainly an area where you should

consider strategy before tactics.

The first step is to understand how your

current customers are using social media

and how you can use social media to

somehow serve them better. If you do that, you’ll get

immediate value.

Create Twitter lists of customers and add their social

profiles to your CRM tool. Add a tool like Rapportive

to your email.

Then claim and build your profiles on Facebook,

LinkedIn, Google+, YouTube, Picasa, Slideshare

and Pinterest.

Your plan to work and engage prospects in all of these

networks may not be clear yet, but the first step is to

claim the free real estate so you can start exploring.

Once you start to share content, build connections, reshare

other people’s content and discover best practices

in each individual network, you can begin to amplify

your content and start finding ways to drive prospects

to your eBook and newsletter in an attempt to start a

relationship headed towards conversion.

5 Online Advertising

Many people waste advertising and then conclude

it doesn’t work. Pay per click advertising can be very

effective when done right.

One of my favorite things

about it is that a platform

like Google AdWords

allows you to test your

thinking a dollar at a time.

Here’s my take on how to make ads pay – Use your ads

to drive content awareness instead of simply to sell. Drive

Facebook users to sign up for your eBook first and then

you can sell them over and over again.

The basics of PPC are this: Use lots of punchy, dramatic

ad copy, but test, revise and test. Create tightly focused

ad groups with highly relevant ad copy, work negative

keywords out of your list. Test some more.

6 Mobile and Location

Mobile is more of a behavior than a

tool. The first step is to analyze what

behaviors your customers are exhibiting

before you dive into or dismiss Foursquare

or text messaging.

7 Essential Stages of a

Total Online Presence

I can assure you this however, your customers are reading

content, searching for things to buy and using reviews to

make decisions on mobile devices. Claim your location

based profiles in places such as Foursquare and Yelp.

Create mobile and tablet friendly viewing options with

tools such as WPTouch, Tekora or GoMobi. Start

creating mobile specific ads, landing pages, coupons and

offers that take advantage of the growing use of mobile

devices as a major part of the purchasing process.

7 Analytics and Conversion

Like many stage-based processes there is a cyclical

aspect as well. For some, creating benchmarks and key

performance indicators is really the first step. So, if you’re

one of those folks you can start here, because no matter

where you are in the process this stage will always evolve.

Many people can’t start the process of measuring success

until they are measuring in real time or can’t start the

process of tweaking and testing until all of the elements

are in place.

As you build make certain you install

tracking code from tools such as

Google Analytics, Spring Metrics

or KissMetrics so you can begin to

build the data to test and refine from.

Then you can start building conversion goals, funnels and

events, tracking your ads and split testing your landing

pages, opt-in pages and sales pages to discover ways to

increase conversion.

Even something as overwhelming and complex as the

changing face of marketing online gets just a bit more

manageable, I think when you start to view it as a system

it is much easier to understand and grasp.
